Who Can Vote in Council Elections?

Voting in local council elections is open to more people than State and Federal elections. You can vote in the 2027 council elections if you:

  • live in the council area and are enrolled on the State (House of Assembly) electoral roll; or
  • own property in the council area but live elsewhere; or
  • operate a business or represent an organisation that owns or occupies property in the council area; or
  • are part of a group of owners or occupiers (for example, joint owners or business partners).

Some people are automatically enrolled, while others must apply.

Do I need to apply to enrol?

You do not need to apply if:

  • you live in the council area and are already enrolled on the State (House of Assembly) electoral roll for your residential address.

You must apply if:

  • you own property in the council area but live elsewhere
  • you occupy a property as a business tenant
  • you are enrolling on behalf of a business, organisation or group
  • you have enrolled in previous council elections but are not on the State roll for this address

Important: The Council voters roll expires on 1 January of every election year. If you need to apply, previous enrolments do not carry over. All landlords, business lessees and resident non-Australian citizens are removed from the council voters roll (with the exception of City of Adelaide) and must re-enrol to be able to vote.

Enrolment deadline

Applications must be received by close of roll – Monday 04 January 2027. Applications received after this date cannot be accepted for the 2027 Council Elections.
